Repairing Water damage?

Post by Bdawg »

My old laptop was recently damaged when a glass of water spilt on the keyboard. It doesn't turn on, no lights, no whirring. Its not under warranty, so its up to me to fix it. I have a suspicion that the motherboard is damaged.
What are some steps that I can take to make sure its the motherboard?

If you tried to start it while wet, chances are it's hosed.

Leave it sitting on its side in a warm, dry room (preferably near a heat vent) for at least a week. Remove the optical drive, hard drive, keyboard, and expansion cards (leaving the resulting holes open) to maximize airflow.

How old of a laptop? You might be better off just getting a new one. The problem with water damage is that it really could have fried anything.

Probably a year old or so. If its totally screwed, what useful things can I salvage from it?

The hard drive and the memory should work in any laptop of a similar vintage. All the other parts (except the motherboard, which is likely dead) will work on a similar model.

Prolly sell that LCD on Ebay, that prolly be the biggest Item to salvage. As long as it is a pretty modern laptop, should be a problem getting some money out of the LCD.
