Xbox turns off when AV cable is plugged in

I just got an xbox 360 for free from a friend for several reasons, 1. the eject button didn't work, that was fixed with some duct tape 2. It overheats (left side turns red on ring of light). It turns on normal but nothing is displayed on the screen and after a minute or so the fans go full speed, then the left side turns red. I unplugged the av cable, and left only the power brick plugged in, and it ran fine for >20 minutes, and then I plugged the av plug in and red lights... again If you have any suggestions let me know, I don't care about opening it, the warranty sticker is already broken.

if it turns off when the cables are plugged in...
the cause wold be a short to do with that port of the cable.
try a diffrent cable.

for the overheat open it up and re apply the thermal compound to the die's
if it has the old GPU heatsink look around fot the new one (w/ heatpipe)

its doesn't turn off right when the av cable is plugged in, it overheats which then causes it to turn off. I was planning on redoing the thermal paste tomorrow, along with cleaning out all the dust that i'm sure has accumulated inside. Did the elites originally come with the new GPU heatsink? I'm not sure if It has it on right now, but I do have an extra heatsink w/ heatpipe so ill give that a try when i work on it tomorrow.

Methinks that you need to reflow the gpu and up the cooling.

Well with a ps3 you normaly use flux,
With a 360 it is usually done without flux but the fix may last longer if you use flux.
Personally i dont use flux
