Ps2 won't read discs. Please help?

Yeah, the ps2 slim I got fairly recently won't read discs. I put a dvd in it and all it did was make a scary noise and make these fine circular scratches on the disc. What's wrong?

I've tried it both horizontally and vertically.

I had a similar problem with a phat PS2. It's most likely a bad laser that moves up too far and scratches the disc.

yea just replace the laser unit.

you dont even need to do that. in the fat ps2 there is a screw that adjusts the height of the laser unit. ill look in the slim one too. post for more info
