DS Lite to TV/monitor

Post by hackanub »

Hey guys,

I've always wanted to do this mod to the DS Lite, so I'm posting here to ask if anyone here has done it or something similar. The mod would consist of wiring the DS to output video to a TV or monitor using an FPGA. I got the inspiration to do it from this mod: http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/DS/jumbotron/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I want to go in a different direction, though. Instead of displaying the picture from the DS onto laptop screens, I want to display it on a TV or monitor. The problem is, I'm extremely new to DS mods and mods in general. I've only JUST started on the first mod I'm going to attempt which I came across here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwkqc1cT ... r_embedded" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's why I'm looking for people who have already done this type of mod or something similar. I need all the help I can get while I'm undertaking this project. I have no experience in this, but I'm willing to buckle down, study my ass off and do the work necessary to get it done.

So if there's anybody out there who can help me, or give me tips or ANYTHING at all, I would appreciate it A LOT.

I've always wanted to play my DS games on the big screen. I know the DS' resolution isn't made for that, but it won't bother me. I can't pass up a chance to play Mario Kart, Pokemon etc. in all it's pixelated glory hehe.

Once again, if anybody can help me, please make your presence known. I'll give you a cookie! :)

Do you mean top screen on the TV, bottom in your hands?

YES! Well, honestly I'll take it whatever way I can get it, lol. Top screen on the TV would be absolutely fine with me. At first I was thinking I wanted both screens displayed on the TV, but I figure that will be unnecessary extra work since I mainly play touchscreen optional games.

And before anyone asks, I don't want to deal with emulators. I know it will make it easier, but I just want it so that the top screen will be displayed on the TV/monitor off of my DS. No emulators, please! :)

Parts and approximate cost (you can do better scrounging for stuff on eBay):

Gateway M275 screens (14" 1024x768): $100*2 (eBay)
LVDS modules (Advantech PCM-205): $60*2
Digilent S3BOARD + headers: $130
Nintendo DS: $100
Wacom pen: $30

Grand total: With miscellaneous parts $600.

That is a lot of money, especially for a mod that is kinda pointless. Since the DS already has a screen and why would you wanna blow it up on a TV and get bad graphics and a lot of pixelation.

I'm very certain I can find all those parts for cheaper. I MIGHT even have me a buddy who can sell 'em to me for dirt cheap. I will not need the Gateway screens, as I've said. I already have a DS Lite, and I won't need a Wacom pen. So really it is not going to cost much at all.

As for why I want to do it... Like I said, I've just always wanted to play my DS games on the big screen in all their pixelated glory. I know it seems silly, but it's just something I've always wanted to do.

I imagine it couldn't look any worse than a snes game. and if it was only the top screen I think that would work. Games like metal slug don't even use the bottom screen

If you want a cheap way to make the images from a DS's screen bigger, buy an overhead projector and build a projector like this. It'll screen door like crazy, having it slightly out of focus may help to smooth it out.

A little bump from the dead...

On that website doesn't he say something about the ds motherboard having labeled R,G and B outputs. The huge fpga board he has just decodes the touch screen touches. If I can find my DS I'll check it out.
