I couldn't find anything so I don't know if this has been discussed because it's technically in a gray zone, but I think would be a great idea if it''s plausible.
I've been thinking about chopping up my GC and making a portable since it came out, but haven't had quite the incentive due to my negativity of portable game consoles using discs.(IDK, but it just seems like if you move at all it could skip or the lens could scratch easily if you didn't do a great job with it.)
But, coming to the day and age when any type of mod is possible(just look at this whole website!)
I was just wondering if I could eliminate the need for an optical drive and boot solely from a memory card like the SD gecko or something.
I'm not sure cause I haven't delved that far into backup/homebrew scene for the GC, but I do know you can rip to a SD card without a modchip, but that requires the use of a disc.
Is there a way to possibly do away with the disc drive and allow the booting from a memory card?
If you have to first insert a loader disc, what about a way to make something like a virtual drive chip with that loader disc's image?
I'm just thinking of a slimmer system with an SD card slot, so you wouldn't have to worry about all your games getting scratched on the go and possibly ruining your lens.
I'm not talking piracy, I'm just wanting a safer and more portable system.
If you could take out the disc drive, would that also chalk up the battery life?
I'm just looking for some answers and giving out ideas for you guys.
I'm going to do more research and post my findings, but until then play with this idea!
Hell, it could make a pretty slim wii portable, because you don't even need the discdrive once it has been modded to play from usb/sd
and that would be pretty cool and even better solution, but alas, I have no wii!

It's been discussed here before. The only SD loader for commercial games doesn't work very well, but it seems it is possible to flash it to a mod chip. Games may freak out if they can't talk to the drive.

You still need the optical drive to be present.
