Need help tracking wires in cable!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Need help tracking wires in cable!

Post by metrolf »

We're two guys working on a portable n64. We're having a few issues as everyone else, but this is a problem regarding the screen we chose. We are not going for the psONE screen like everyone else, but an external screen from a car DVD. The brand is Akai if thats of any help. It wasn't to us;)

The biggest problem seemed to be that the screen receives both power, and a/v signals through a large 9-pin Svideo cable. We have two of these cables, luckily, so we sliced one in half and had a look. It consists of seven small wires; yellow, green, red, white, blue, black and grey . There's one fat black cable with two wires inside. the center one has a transparent plastic coating, the other surrounds it (noobish explanation, but there is two wires inside one fat cable, sort of...). (All wires are wrapped in a thin foil and a net of wires spun around. We twisted it together and bent it to the side. Shows on the picture as the copulate up thingy on the left side) (see the picture)

We have by experimenting gotten backlight on the screen (by connecting grey to positive and the white and fat black cable (not the transparent center wire) to negative on a 9 V battery, but the small red, green and blue wires also worked on the negative) and sound, but we have not figured out where the videosignal comes from and where we are gonna connect it.. we have tried to put the yellow wire on the composite plug from the n64, but we are not sure if the yellow even is the video wire or which wire is the ground.

If anyone would kindly lend us their expertise, and tell us what the different wires are for(a/v, ground, +, -, etc.). We would be grateful. please note that we are both n00bs:)

This is the Akai screen with a 9-pin s-video-like cable input. Half-butchered, but working!

The screen before we disassembled it. it has volume control, color and contrast control plus the possibility to switch between 16:9 and 4:3

We're using the mini rca jack to test the av wires.
