While not necessarily cheaper (same price as iLuv iSP100: $20), these speakers are available at Radioshack and have a power switch, volume control (wheel), and run off 4.5v. I prefer the volume wheel over tact switches, but that is just personal preference. The sound quality is very good and the whole setup is relatively small. I laughed when the cashier asked me if I wanted an extended warranty on them, because it would've been void within 10 minutes of getting home.
