Atari 2600 Jr. Laptop (AKA Laptari) worklog

Post by Dodificationer »

Hi, my friend is doing a n64 portable as part of a school assignment-
http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33169
-and i decided to try a portable of my own.

Looking for inspiration, I looked around and found my old 2600 jr. i got at a school fair for $5.
When i was looking around at other portable consoles, i saw a multitude of laptop gaming consoles, but none for the atari.

I suddenly remembered an old laptop that i saw lying in a cupboard that is around about the same size as the atari 2600 jr.
The laptop i'm guessing, is from around 1994 (judging by the warranty stickers), which is good because I was aiming for something retro looking.

Some ideas:
Replace the keyboard (conveniently hinged and clips into the base of the laptop case) with a custom built cover, and mount the controllers, switches etc. on there.
Try to keep a rechargeable battery in the case, with a lead to both run on wall power and charge the battery.
Have a cartridge slot built in, an for the cartridge to be flush with the case.

If any one can help me with this it would be much appreciated.

P.S - pictures to come...

You will need to find a screen to use that is the right size.

Not easily, no. The lcd uses an entirely different language from the console, you would need to build a costly converter that would be very time consuming and not for anyone who is a beginner.

Ok, so after being too busy to do any work on the Laptari
I finally took apart the screen portion of the laptop.
I took out the screen and detached the mounting bracket.
So now i'm currently looking for a screen thats about 11 inches, but i need to make sure that its slim enough
and that it will fit securely into the bracket.

I also was looking at the different composite video mods that people had posted for the 2600 jr. but i have a PAL format one,
which looks different to all the ones that have been used for the mod. at this point i hadn't removed the RF shield.

My board (sorry about the flash)

And here's the one posted by hk47 in this tut

If anyone can help me with the location of parts i need to do the composite mod on, then that would be very much appreciated
