Laptop hybrid?

Post by isamu »

Hi there. Great forum you guys got here. I was wondering....has anyone made either a PS2, Xbox, or GameCube laptop hybrid? Y'know, a box that functions as a full fledge laptop and can play either GC. PS2, or Xbox games?

I am particularly interested in a GC/Laptop hyrbid. How much would it cost to have someone do this?

Why not just get a $2000 laptop with an ATI Radeon mobility card and get a working Gamecube Emulator?

Something like this is what I mean:

Who else would I be?

It would be a lot cheaper though to get those consoles instead of the laptop, but that is more pratical, and that gamecube emulator does not offer 100% compatiblity, a gamecube does.

The other emulators don't work too great either.
If you REALY want to play Unreal Tournament 2004 and Mario Sunshine or Katamari, make a portable that can fit with your Alienware or some other gaming laptop in the carrying case.

I'm going to be trying something similar with a slim PS2 and an old Thinkpad laptop - gut the old lap-top and mod a slim PS2 to make a fairly portable PS2 with a "large" screen.

My biggest concern is hooking up the monitor ribbon to the slim PS2 (which I have yet to pick up). Has anybody ever hooked up a laptop monitor to a PS2?

You need a controller card for the LCD. Can the PSTwo output VGA? There's a fairly cheep $75 controller for VGA that could work with a laptop panel.

It's not impossible, but very unlikely. He tends to make a portable he feels like making, and your offer would have to be pretty darn good, and include a large down payment, I'd imagine.

Yeah, I've done some digging around online and took another look at the cable to the screen. I'd have to get a cable to convert a PS2 signal to VGA (not bad, only $25), a card to convert VGA to digital (that gets pricy), and there's no simple way of hooking it up, even if it's possible.

Either way, it's getting to be more cost than what it's worth, so I'll have to figure out an alternative. I want to keep costs as much under $200 as possible, 'cause otherwise I'd might as well just buy a PSP. I'll have to find an alternative solution.

I think I've found myself a solution that would be fairly cost effective. The 2 (5") PS2 screens I've seen on the market are TFT and designed to have a 640 by 480 resolution (providing controler and adapter for the screen), so in theory I should be able to hotwire it to the laptop screen. That, and eBay is my freind, so I can get this hardware fairly cheap. That would free up some cash for a few other things I can add - such as multi-tap and a remote.
