Actually, I thought the bong could prove quite useful

Ordinarily I'd agree, but plastic is not something I'd want to smoke out of. He could have used so many other things as a bong, but instead used an N64 controller.

Actually, I have made an N64 controller bong. I can tell you that it's definitely NOT useless... in fact, it has gotten a lot of use (and it's a big "hit" at parties!)
I used a real glass bowl, inserted where the joystick normally goes, and I can tell you for a fact that mine doesn't get hot enough to melt the plastic. I know this because I used hot glue to seal the bowl to the controller, and it hasn't gotten hot enough to melt any of the hot glue. Hence, it's not getting hot enough to melt the plastic.
The secret is: get a bowl with as long a stem as you can find, and keep the bowl part as far away as possible from the plastic. Easy as that.

Oh, and don't use a trumpet mouthpiece as a bowl, like I saw one kid do. That has the potential to get HOT
