Re: Official LOB64 Interface Standard
ah, i thought there was something i was possibly missing. but then that would just mean most would simply need 2 ethernet ports. that's still not very much to add into a portable. especially when it's such an awesome thing to have! granted, genesis and playstation would need something other than ethernet, but it would work for the other systems you mentioned.
they call me the Queen of Bondo, though maybe i should be called the Queen of Epoxy Putty

Re: Official LOB64 Interface Standard
I concur - 2 ethernet is still better than using a parallel cable (can you even find them much anymore?). It'd be tough to find the actual parallel ports, too, especially ones that aren't 'stacked' on the I/O panel of a discarded computer.lovablechevy wrote:ah, i thought there was something i was possibly missing. but then that would just mean most would simply need 2 ethernet ports. that's still not very much to add into a portable. especially when it's such an awesome thing to have! granted, genesis and playstation would need something other than ethernet, but it would work for the other systems you mentioned.
That being said, the original Playstation has a serial port (for multi-system play, no less, but few games used it), and nearly all also had a parallel port (until the 9000 series of mid '97 onward). Neither port can be found on the smaller PSone systems used for portables, however.

parallel ports will be never to hard to find. They are used to jtag many electronic equipment, and you can always just buy a seperate plug.eagle5953 wrote:I concur - 2 ethernet is still better than using a parallel cable (can you even find them much anymore?). Whoah, didn't notice I had that many, next stop, 201..wait...202! That seems right.eagle5953 wrote:Wasn't aware of that - good to know (thought they were just for old printersDark-Aries wrote:parallel ports will be never to hard to find. Problem with paralell ports is that they look ugly. Ethernet ports are small and look nice. Now if we can get somebody to hack up two cable together, so that the ends have 8 pins on the bottom, 8 pins on the top, then make a plug, I think we would bypass any problem of not having enough cables for the portables that require them.

That would work, but there's a few issues with that idea, too.Dark-Aries wrote:Problem with paralell ports is that they look ugly. Ethernet ports are small and look nice. You'd need a custom cable and two custom ports. Doable, but only if you are making both portables - nobody is using a custom multiplayer port in the off chance they run into someone with the same port and the custom cable.
The LOB64 standard has already been criticized as being a lot of work considering how limited its use is unless you own two. This would be true times three for other portables, considering the extra effort involved in making custom ports and cables.
That being said, practicality (in terms of use compared to effort) is not necessarily a goal here, as always.

Re: Official LOB64 Interface Standard
Yes, but the goal here is to make it a STANDARD (sorry, not screaming, just emphasizing), atleast I think that's the goal. If wer get somebody to make the required cables and ports, it's now a standard as everybody usesthem. IF somebody else tries to make their won, and it still works with the previous cables and ports, then the goal is still complete. And the custom cable and port would only be needed for....4 PLAYERS! DUN DUN DUN!.....on any console but the n64...eagle5953 wrote:That would work, but there's a few issues with that idea, too.Dark-Aries wrote:Problem with paralell ports is that they look ugly. Re: Official LOB64 Interface Standard
What about using something like a microcontroller to encode and then decode the signals using a one wire interface?

Re: Official LOB64 Interface Standard
That could work aswell, but the time to figure out how to make it work flawlessly might be time consuming...XCVG wrote:What about using something like a microcontroller to encode and then decode the signals using a one wire interface?

It links two Nintendo 64 portables to each other for multiplayer gaming.zealot2009 wrote:What does this even do I have no idea what is going on and dont bash me because I'm a newbie.

Re: Official LOB64 Interface Standard
Just to clarify, what determines whether or not the system is a slave or master is the switch that turns the N64 on or off. The suggestion was to use a cartridge slot switch. Cart in = Master, No Cart = Slave. The Klobio Box determines what player you are, by which port you plug it into. There is a Master Port, and P2, P3, and P4 ports. The Klobio Box uses standard ethernet cables. For only two players, a custom ethernet cable can be used.
