N64 Dark Gray Paint

Post by jjhammerstein »

Krylon Fusion does not make a semigloss dark gray suitable for imitating the original N64 color.

Is it possible to mix black and pewter to get this effect?
If no, what other paints are available that would do well on plastic?

You'd need some sort of matte grey to get the n64's dull effect.
It doesn't reflect much, you know.

Yeah, but I don't want it to be totally flat gray.
I suppose "matte" is closer to what I want.

Now find me some! :x

Go to home depot, they have free color matching!
Ha, you probably don't want to do that.

They don't do spray paint though, right? Otherwise, I totally totally would do that.

They probably would, if you ask them politely enough.
I've done it at my local Home Depot...
Although i believe it is intended for paint by the bucket.

How can you colour match spray paint? It's premixed and sealed in!

My thoughts exactly.

If only, though.

Just like in a bucket of paint.
You can know what's inside without opening it.
You can simply have a few archives of what the color is before you package it.

some places can do custom rattlecan spraypaints but its pretty expensive (like 10-25$ per can IIRC) and i dont know the names of any places that do it offhand other than auto paint stores like dupont

I saw something about using RIT dye to color plastics.
I could make just the color I want using that, and then use a Krylon Matte finish coat or two to dull it down.

Thoughts?

I've never used the RIT dye, but there is an aerosol sprayer for custom-mixed paints. It's made by Preval. I've used it myself, with very nice results. It works with oil or latex-based paints, and the aerosol cartridge is easy to replace.

Sweet! Too bad you can't get them up here in the "great white north"

Wow, that's really cool.
Could I get something like it at Home Depot, or do I have to order it?

That totally seems like the way to go, at this point. There are no paints that are EXACTLY the color I want, this solves that.

Would you recommend oil or latex paint? What finish?
