I'm thinking about cooling.

I spelled "dissipator" wrong, pretend I didn't.

Is this a terrible idea? I'll use risers to keep it from shorting anything on the board, and I can make it basically as big as the whole system. If I can make the copper dissipator big enough, would I even need a fan?

SS told me to run it by Marshallh, since he knows about this kind of stuff. If you don't reply, I'll PM you! You cannot escape me! :D

I suggested a while ago in a different, related thread, to use the metal shield; remove the thick blocks but retain the gunk between the chips and the shielding; thus having the system low but also removing the heat from the system.

There's actually a 1-pixel line of paste between the chips and metal in my diagram. XD
It's dark gray.

Either the N64 gunk, or some other type of paste would work.

Copper is a better dissipator material in general, it has a higher heat conductivity, and higher thermal mass than steel. Basically, it can move more heat away from the chips, faster. I think it's a grand scheme.

The N64 gunk or any white gunk is inferior to a good metal or metal-oxide grease. Arctic Silver is REALLY good. For this application it should be okay. However, you shouldn't reuse the gunk. Get new gunk.

I'll probably get Arctic Silver, because I WON'T SETTLE FOR LESS.

What do you think of ditching the heat blocks?

Ditch them. They are only there for mechanical reasons, not heat reasons. :D

So, I was planning on starting the controls today, and I ran into a little trouble.

The joystick from my N64 controller has only 2 wires per axis, while the PS2 stick I plan on using has 3. I have no idea what to do. Any help?

I may be wrong... But I think you join the two middle pins of each pot together, and use the two outer ones on the X and Y axis.

If you make a side-loading system, there is no reason that your portable couldn't end up being about 20-22mm thick; although it would be long. The game cart is about 18mm thick (so 22mm to allow for case and included recessed buttons). The N64 board could be half under the PSone screen mobo and out the other end, with space for joystick and batteries at the other end.

The choices for a system are always: weight distribution, length and height vs thickness (if your case is big you have the luxury of space, if your case is small you have to pile in multi-layers).

Large bump, but it may motivate JJ to do this. He has some good ideas that will make an awesome portable.

you have to make sure that none of the wires are touching each other when you relocate. If they are touching, it won't work.

Also make sure you are wiring them to the right holes. Remember the outer holes are the ones you want. not the inner ones. And if you're doint something like flipping it around remember which pin goes to what hole.

I know it's obvious advice but it's an easy mistake to make.
