Replace scratching xbox drive?

Post by oscarinabox »

Hello this is my first post on this forum. I am new to console modding but i am fluent in building and repairing computers. I have a xbox 360 that scratches discs. I thought maybe it was because the disc was wobbling and i opened it up and put foam padding in the drive but the problem persists. I have now replaced it with a arcade jasper. I was wondering if i could buy another drive to install, so i could either sell the system or for another xbox 360 in my living room . I can provide more information if necessary. I thank everyone for taking the time to help!

p.s. i hope i didn't post this in the wrong section :P

Hello and welcome to the forums. I think you are in the right section, I doubt it would matter otherwise.
So to answer your question is actually 2 parts. First can you replace the DVD drive, the answer is yes you can physically replace a bad drive with a new one. Problem, microsoft was very clever in designing the system to have serialized DVD drives to match your specific system. If you replace the drive and hook up onlne, the system will communicate the mismatch and effectionately disconnect on top of the drive not functioning at all. Im assuming they fear people tampering with the systems and thats frowned upon. SO, how do we get around this? There is a modding company who sells the "tools" required to extract the serial key from your origional drive to then be inputted into that shiney new replacement. I looked online, the company I found was team executor, they make a lot of the reprogramming setups. I hope this helps answer anyone else wondering the same thing.
Good luck with the swap.

You've gotta keep in mind that if you replace the DVD drive for a new one and do the flashing to change its serial information that any time you connect it to LIVE Microsoft has a chance to give your system a diagnostic test and find out if it's been modified in software or hardware aspects. If they find any discrepancies they ban your console from LIVE completely and don't allow you to dispute it.
My advice if you do this is to keep it as a console that you don't connect to LIVE at all for online gaming. Use it for single player gaming or as a system to play backups on if you can figure out how to do that, maybe let little kids play it so they don't touch the nice one :P. You won't get to update the dashboard, update game patches, or get DLC if you do this (if you keep it disconnected). You could connect it and take a chance on getting caught and banned if updates are important to you (they are nice but you'll already have a console for keeping connected to the internet).

Oh yeah by the way a new DVD drive is like $30, you have to use one designed for 360, not just any DVD drive.

P.S. I'm not sure if the thread is that relevant to the forum's topic but I know how hard it is to find help with that kind of stuff (it's really technical and the forums that focus around it are NOT friendly to anyone who hasn't already done it or anyone who is new to posting).
