I have some new diffusion material just calling for me in a box I got yesterday, not opened yet. Will post pics when I do!

The PSone screen is nice stock, but the materials used are not made for LED light distribution at all; My biggest worry is that the extra brightness will wash it out, hopefully that is not an issue.

Made a bit of progress, I am wiring the LEDs as _Kurt suggested.

For americans, look into a free sample of 3M's BEF and DBEF films. They make things sunlight readable.

Do they just block glare, or do they use magic to make normal displays act as transflective ones?

Transreflective. It's another diffusing layer (Which means less brightness without incoming light), but when you're in the sun, it gets about twice as bright. I'll be experimenting with an LED mod and transreflective film soon, so I'll let you know the results if you don't want to. They're free to Americans I'm pretty sure though. (BEF and DBEF work in different ways, and the BEF patent has expired so can be had for cheap, using both creates epic sunlight displays apparently).

Abuse it and lose it. Don't order them unless you're looking to help pioneer the process for the rest of us. Otherwise, you're just wasting it. Also, I may need someone to order some for me, I'll find out soon.

Of those on that page, whcih would be suitable for what you are suggesting? I would get the polarized film, but that would require re-doing the polarizer layer. Probably the best results, but for a test, I would prefer to avoid the hassle.

As some of you know, I broke my laptop's LCD. It still works, however, so I'd be willing to give it a shot.

I also have a feeling it's not a replacement for the rear polarizer.

If you go there, there's a brief description of the Vikuiti Dual Brightness Enhancment Films. Note the last one states it is designed to be laminated to the bottom of the LCD glass. The others are worded to sound like a replacement or addition to diffusing sheets.

As for which product to get, one of the BEF, and one of the DBEF. The brightness enhancement film (BEF) is a sheet of prisms that magnifies the backlight, I believe. The DBEF is for transreflectiveness.

Man, I would pay to have some LED arrays like that. I have not quiet hacked my screens yet to utilize LED mods, besides removing the transformer for the CCFL. I didn't want to make a screen that had lighting issues, so I was wondering why we have not invested time into looking for more solutions to backlighting and power consumption. But here it is!

Not to mention reading about those posts about how Ben's original method for powering the LEDs with 10ohm resistors is a killer on their lifespan.

Those 3M films look interesting, especially the sunlight readable one. Unfortunately i'm in the uk so i can't easily get hold of them.

Anyway here's a couple of shots of my led-lit screen vs a stock screen:





I made sure they were at the same height and angle, and there's not much to pick between them brightness-wise. The led screen is running off RGB and the ccfl is using composite, so the video signal isn't being being shared between the screens.

The ccfl is ever so slightly brighter, but you only notice it when the screens are side by side.

palmertech, how are you getting on with driving your led strips? they look quite thin, so it might be possible for you to fit them in a U-shape around the screen like the original ccfl, i bet they would look great like that.

With some of that 3M film too you could end up with a screen that looks better than the original at a much lower power-cost.
