Pal Snes

Post by eo32 »

Hi all,
I have been working on a fancy box for my portable snes (its less of a handheld and more of a flight case) and have got to the assembly stage and noticed that my snes takes AC!!! 9v @ 1.3a (well thats what the official power supply outputs) DAMN!! I always assumed that it took DC input

I was just wondering if anyone knew if I could input just after the rectification (I can't even find the ac-dc converter) or even just straight the the pins on the 7805 (again I assumed this took a DC input)?
Many thanks,
Eo

Yes the SNES uses DC. If you want to run it off of a bettery, you connect the termanals to the positive and negitive on the power plug on the board.
As for the AC>DC converter thats the wall plug.

ok

okay, but why would nintendo have an ac input on the snes if it could produce a wall plug that outputs a dc voltage over the 7.2v?

and just to check your saying that the snes can accept both AC and DC?
Thanks for the quick reply

Well I dont know why Nintedo would say the SNES can take AC, it cant use it and thats a fac about most appliances.

And for the SNES using both AC and DC no. You should have a brick, wall plug, exteral psu, it has many names, it were the converter is. To my knowlege the only system Nintedo made with internal psu is the GameCube.

I know, I'm with you on this one it seems idiotic but I can assure you that my pal snes (very early model) takes an AC input. The exact wording on the supply is:

AC Adapter
Model no: NES-002 (GBR)
Input AC 230/240V 50hz 17W
Output AC 9v 1.3A
Power Supply for use with (Super) Nes Control Deck only

Any ideas?
(Apologies if I am utterly wrong here, it has been one of those days however I have triple checked everything I can think of)

I cant for the life of me understand why they would tell you that. It should only be on the PSU, not the console the only power info you should have one the console is "input DC 9v 1.3A".

If you cant figure this out just PM gannon to commet, he has an only SNES so he might konw.

It might be a typo. Take a multimeter and check the voltage. If it remains the same somewhere ~ 9v then its definatly a typo of some sort. If the voltage goes up and down, it might be ac... Im just not sure why anyone would need a 9v ac source. :?

Hmm

Post by eo32 »

Sorry if I have mislead you, the console doesn't say its an ac input but the transformer I got with the console and have been using for the past 10 years to power it outputs AC at 9v (measured at just over 10v AC, oh yes I can use a multimeter :D )

If anyone can shed any light it'd be great, of course I'll keep you guys updated

Many thanks once again

Are you using a 3rd party AC adaptor? If so, then there shouldn't be a problem. They probably made it output AC to be cheaper. (I'm assuming its possible to send AC into a DC device without it frying) If its an official Nintendo one, then I don't know...

Ok... that may of been a dumb question.

Yes, it is possible to build a SNESp out of Ben's book if you live in UK. You just use a PAL Pocket TV (any 2.6" screen will do really, I have one)
