N64 HDD?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

N64 HDD?

Post by monster »

could you put games onto a hard drive? a 100GB ultra slim line hard drive would be so much more portable than a bunch or cartridges. it would be great to have a HDD but still keep a socket to play the cartridges.

can/has this be done? if it would take L33t soldering and programming $k1llz that means its out of my league

No :)

The closest you'll get would be to buy a C64 or similar and play roms off a CDR.

Can it be done: yes
What would it take: A not so complex circuit, a lot of ASM programming knowledge, a lot of n64 cartridge and cpu interface knowledge.
Can you do it: no :P

I know some ASM (enough to ask where the bathroom is). The N64 is 32bit right?

No the N64 is 64bit (check howstuffworks.com).

I can see how you can save storage space not having carts, but really considering that almost all games for the N64 ar $15 or less its not bad.

you would program the n64 rom to think it has a regular cart but you put a menu and conect a hard drive (thats without going in depth)

I think a n64 game is anywhere from 5 to 30 MB, but I could be wrong

The highest N64 game is 512 megabits.

So that's roughly 64 Megabytes.

At least I'm pretty sure.
