BackLit GameBoy Pocket is go!

Post by Bibin »

I've started work on my backlit GameBoy Pocket. For now, I'll just tease you with some horribly shot pics from my terrible but in focus webcam. Video coming soon.

These pics make it look awful, but that's 1) because this is an awful camera and 2) the reflector I'm using is garbage - I've already got a suitable replacement but I am too lazy to put it in tonight. I'll put it in once I get my new Game Boy Pocket shells to assemble this with; that'll likely be the finished product. More updates to come soon.

How's the battery life/what type of backlight is that?

In the pictures, it's running off of an external battery, but in the final I'll have the power LED chopped off, and it'll run off of the voltage that would be supplied to the LED.

The backlight is made out of two 3mm LED's I stole from my old pile of broken cell phones and LCD's. They both work, and run happily off of 3V. A test I did that had the red power LED and backlight LED's running in parallel got me ~6 hours of battery life off of the two AAA batteries. Not too shabby for such a bright backlight, eh?

I also fixed the uneven lighting problem by moving the LED's a tad and also moving the layers around a bit. I can't work on this for a few days until I get my new GBP shells.

Off-topic bit: SMl2, very nice choice of game.

Darn it! You beat me! Me and Bibin have both been working on this. I got mine working, but there were little specs of glue left behind, so I took it apart to clean it, and I accidentally broke the top half of the ribbon cable. it still works, though, partly, Gonna take pics later today.

I tried EL sheets; it sucks your batteries dry. I'm not done; I'll post more pics of the finished thing later.

It looked alright, but it was very dim, even running off of 5v externally. That's the most you'll get out of your GB pocket without adding some more components anyway.

I'm going to work on this a bit more today, so expect pics.

That is how it did it. But the gb light used AA batteries, not AAA. Also, the backlight power circuit was made to be small and effecient. Normal ones are not.

My cameras USB drivers are screwed up, I need to find the disc. Thanks for the tip you gave me, Bibin, gonna see if it works.
