Yes, SS, I am working hard to complete this project!! I am even working through part of the night lately...

Update, guys!

I think it was lovablechevy who thought using plug'n'plays were a simple matter - I can report actually it isn't - harder in some ways to regular systems.

Take something like an N64 or SNES or whatever, do one and you are fast at making a second one (you know what to expect and what you are doing after all), and systems like the SNES are only a matter of connecting power, grounds, video and audio and you are set.

Plug'n'plays are a similar beast, of course, but they are quirky and each one is different and wired differently. Making them into game carts is a bit like making half a portable with each one and making them cram into a small space means relocating some parts.

To give some ideas of problems:

Namco - Pacman, Galaxians, Dig Dug, Rally-X, Bosconian: this one wasn't too difficult, quite standard stuff, had some teething issues, but works reliably now.

Space Invaders (Taito / Radica) - Space Invaders, Lunar Rescue, Colony 7, Qix, Phoenix: tempremental; took external power but not internal. Turned out the LED was very picky about wire length and thickness. Took a few hours to work this out and fix (fine now).

Intellivision - (a few games) - nothing like I have seen before - it doesn't use common grounds (WTF!), and the grounds for the d-pad is different to the button controls. Got the board carved up and carefully re-wired, got video and sound but controls refused to work. The system uses capacitors on some parts of the grounding, so I guess the system registers keypresses by voltage changes or whatever. Going to have to try this again (lost a day work on this). Will have to fold the board up on next attempt to keep everything as intended, and wire to everything.

Point is that it is not as easy as you might imagine!

I am getting used to making a cart from scratch and wiring to the traces, etc of the game cart.

Getting my batteries today (yay) so once they come, I will spend the rest of today, and part / all of tomorrow hacking the back of my case and getting the case sides on.

I will have this project finished, it is just a matter of how many add-on carts I make in the time. (I only need one, made two so far). I am hoping to make another one and also get a GBA system incorporated too. These boards are larger, will need to be creative with the cart design. The GBA can be tempremental (going to try a different tv-out card if I can), and will take a lot of work, so may not be able to complete it before deadline finishes.

I will have my entry entered in time!!

Anyway, pic of my two carts, both work great.

Got the artwork from arcade picture sites with marquees, and cut and pasted them into my artwork. Colony 7 was amazingly hard to find, found one site (only) with a flyer, so used that.

Image

Irrespective of the GBA, I will do one of those 128-in-1 game type NES games as system three.

Awesome work Brian. I was anxious to see what you were going to do with that case.

Bacteria, I'm digging the look of your cartridges. It has an awesome multi-cab look.

Lovablechevy, looking forward to seeing your portable. You do some nice work, despite being relatively new to the hobby.

I've been working on my own portable these last two days. (It's not eligible for the comp). Im going to update my thread later on tonight.

grahf - Kind comments.

I am really happy with the look of the game carts I have made.

Working on the 128-in-1 game system. It is bigger than expected but I am sure I can "trim" it down enough!

Yippee - my new batteries just came! They are the same as the ones used in my Multi-Platform system, but half height, at 20mm tall and half the weight (99g each); 2000mA each, so I have 4000mA; enough to run my systems (apart from GBA when made) for about 4.5 hours, probably about 2.5 hours for GBA, BTW. They fit the battery compartment I made a few days ago (phew, saves me some time!) and I can now get cracking on getting the console completed! :D

My system is on track again - everything was riding on the batteries coming today or tomorrow!

Image

Not updated web site for last few days, will definitely do it in next couple of days - have to concentrate on getting my entry completed first!

EDIT:

oh yeah!

thanks! i'm hopin i'll be able to get it done in time. i've been running into several issues that are simply wasting my time. but, i am determined to get it done, even if it means a few sleepless nights.

Wow, only took me 1.5 hours and the battery mounting is in and secured, and wired, the sides on the case are in place; system could be done this afternoon at this rate!!

Tip - bought some A2 black plastic display folders the other day. Quite thick plastic, when in strips (for the sides), really quite rigid but also flexible enough to go around things ok with a little hot glue and general purpose glue. This material is also attractive.

Best sides to a case I have done...ever...

:D

Apologies, someone posted a comment a while back on my forum and I thought it was you, sorry about that! Oh well, I made a mistake!!

BTW - understand your problems, in same boat, late nights, wasted hours trying to get something working and finding it is something simple all the time...

Hope you solve your issues and enter your system. What issues do you have incidentally??

Nope, designed them from finding merquess and flyers for the games on the net, and printing them out. I will give them a good coat of varnish soon to preserve the paper and stop it marking and getting damaged.

well, the front of my case cracked. and it was basically done. just needed clear coat. now i have to sand, spot putty, prime, paint, and clear coat... and it's been rainy all week so far...

and, my electronics side is giving me a few issues. but, i took it all apart and started over last night. i think i found a few mistakes, so as long as i work slowly and carefully, hopefully i'll get it all working tonight.

i meant, what are you printing it on? is it decal inkjet paper, just white labels, or just paper that you are gluing down?

That's 3 words.

lovablechevy - Just printing it on standard 160gsm white paper. Nice and absorbent. Then, using PVA glue to stick it to the perspex.

Got casing sides done, back screwed down, etc - need to make the back look nice though (today's work).

One thing I wanted to share with you guys - I spent ages protecting my black glossy perspex to keep it shiny and perfect. Took it off yesterday, thought "wow, nice"; but after holding the system for a few moments and playing one game, looked at the perspex and it was covered with fingerprints and smudged fingerprints; looked bad. No point having a casing that needs high maintenance to keep its looks; so I painted it. Rather than trying to go for a smooth look, decided it would be attractive and unusual to go for an "oil paint" look, in single colour (black). By using a small paintbrush and doing paint strokes in various directions and with slightly more paint in some places than others, you get the effect. Had wondered about making it two-tone, but single looks nice.

Result is far more durable than before, looks very nice - in fact, looking at it now, it looks far NICER than with flat shiny black and is zero maintenance (once I have varnished the paint of course).

Thought I would share this with you - smooth is nice but consider textured effect. I think it really looks georgeous! Paint I used was standard "featured wall" paint.

Back to project work again, all day; have tomorrow too to finish...all on track. The batteries work great, BTW and look really nice in the casing.

My wife will be really pleased when this is done, I am getting a lot of grief from her from spending so much time in the evening and night on this project!

UPDATE:

Well, I have a headache from all the concentration and work over the last few days, my neck aches (from craning myself at awkward angles), but my case will be complete in the next hour! :D

I decided in the end to put in an on/off switch in the system, so did some minor rewiring. The system works fine without it (as designed), but I decided in the end that it would be better to have one.

Right, FINISHED!

Just need to varnish the system and let it dry.

Will work on a third cart tomorrow (the 128-in-1 one) if that is done, I will enter it with the other two carts with my system. I will upload a couple of pics and a video tomorrow as my entry in the other thread.

:D :D :D

Website updated - not with final pics yet (the final front and back pics will be uploaded with my compo entry is), but have a look...

Yay! I'm glad you finished it bacteria! It's always cool to see a new idea work out!

Edit: Just thought I'd share - here's the mouser.com link for the multi-directional tact switch I used as a joystick. Click on the "data sheet" pdf link to see a picture of it - it's the one on the far left. They're fun to play with!

Thanks! Considering I have made everything with flat perspex (not pre-made boxes) I think I have done a good job at making this system curvy!

I'm not going to have the time to make a GBA add-on, although my system will support it fine. Wife made me promise I would spend all weekend with her and not my project (boo!), so today (Friday) is realistically my last project day, so I have to try and get my third system made (all going well), get pics of system done, video, upload submission, etc. Busy day! I will be making more game carts for this system over the next weeks for sure!! (GBA and plug'n'plays, etc).

Best finds used on project:

1) Plastic from an A2 presentation display pocket holder - strong 1mm plastic, easy to use as sidings for a case.

2) These below - from e-bay.

Image

Used them for shoulder buttons and Start, Select. Nice, small tact switches with soft click, buttons mounted on tact switch so easy to mount in case.

Perhaps someone should start a sticky with all these good finds we get that are of particular benefit??
