UglyBoy Advance

Post by nightwheel »

I ment to post about this finished project the Sunday before last after I finshed it. but I ran out of time and had to go on a Trip to Washington D.C. with the Boy Scouts.

Anyways, It was the Friday before last. Had a scout fundraiser and a united way thing most of Saturday. And I was getting the last few things ready for my trip to D.C.. And since it was going to be a long drive in a 15 passenger van full of scouts. I was telling myself there's no way in heck. I was just bringing my 256mb MP3 player only. But there was one problem. The complete back half of my GBA's case. Which I have lost it somewhere in the house  .

So that left me with a interesting dilemma. How do I make a case that could accommodate GBA mobo along with the Front half of the GBA's case. And spend nothing to make the Case. Some one suggested I use a Tissue box. Which was the perfect size. But being a Tissue box. It's made outta flimsy, thin cardboard. So during friday and saturday. I had to strengthen it with very strong, thick cardboard inside the box. And making sure I have cut all the necessary holes for thing like the power switch, cartridge slot, earphone jack and volume control, shoulder buttons. And a hole in the back so I could put wire through for my external battery compartment had to add. (More on the Battery Compartment in a moment.)

After finally making sure the case fitted what was left of my GBA just right on Saturday. Another problem arose. How am I going to use batteries on this thing when the GBA's back half of the case has the other part of the it's original battery compartment. So I had to find something to use in place of that. Thankfully, my Namco project provided me a answer. When I took the system apart. I basically discarded is original shell which had a Battery compartment on the bottom half of it. But before I could use it. I had to cut off some of the bottom half's plastic off that surrounded the compartment. After I cut off the plastic that I didn't need off of it. I had myself a battery compartment.

Then came time for me wire the battery compartment. So I found some wire from earphones. (Which I would regret using latter.) And wired the compartment to the GBA. And I went to power it on, Nothing happened. I check the connections and none of them were lose. So I checked if I some how reversed the polarity. Again, nothing happened. So I decided to give it a rest for the night after check the thread about Bacteria's BigBoy Advance to see if I went wrong somewhere. Set my alarm clock for 6:30 am so I could have some time to figure out my problem before I had to let to go to D.C..

Well 6:00 am came and for some reason my mom woke me up. (Which I'm glad she did because I would soon find out that I needed that extra 30 min on top of the extra I was giving myself. To get the GBA working and finished.) So i decided i needed to use thicker wire. So again, discarded parts from the namco came in handy. I had some A/V wire from it that way 3X thicker that earphone wire. I removed the ear phone wire. Then I cut the A/V wire the length I wanted it to be and striped it. Then I wired it to the GBA and the Compartment. Threw the switch and it worked. So I taped the compartment to it place on the back of the case.

Only one more thing was needed to make the GBA ready. Shoulder buttons. Since I couldn't use the GBA's stock shoulder buttons. I had to come up with some alternatives. Some I took some of the thicker cardboard. Cut it to the right size and doubled it on the ends taped it on. The GBA was ready for the Trip. Made sure I packed my Iron and some solder just incase I needed to fix it on the trip. Along with some extra duct tape. And it worked till I was on my way home yesterday. Which one of the wires broke. Which is a easy fix.

Well enough of my blabbing, Here some pics of it.( And as you can see looks lost to fictionality big time.)

Well, you re-soldered the battery compartment back on, and covered the back in duct tape, how much interest did you think you'd get.

It's great for what it is, that's what I'll say about it.

 What has been seen cannot be unseen!
There's really nothing that needs protecting on the back of a gba so just a layer of duct tape across the back with a little bit of thin cardboard over the cartridge slot would have worked instead of turning it into a monster :P
But hey, whatever works

Made me giggle a bit... But it doesn't look very comfortable.

Never said this, so I will now: The GBA only needs a layer of duct tape and a battery holder on the back to work, and it will be very slim. No need for massive cardboard edges that get in the way of your buttons.

I think that it's more of a "for the lulz" mod.
