cheap place to buy BLACK acyrlic?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

cheap place to buy BLACK acyrlic?

Post by woox »

Anyone recommend me a good site to buy 1/4" thick BLACK acrylic sheets for a good price? I tried local but all they had was clear and not black.

Trying to find one that is not so transparent.

(Is acrylic sheets same as plexiglass?)

Thanks (I live in USA)

My solution would be to buy the transparent and then simply spray paint it black. You could probably just spray the inside to get a pretty cool effect.

I tried that but when painted black it was transparent...I wouldnt mind paying a few more bucks to get a solid black acrylic sheet.

I have bought about 20 sheets or so from this seller. Yes, acrylic is perspex.

The link is for black perspex - look at the seller's shop.

Opaque, 1/4 inch. Not a bad price, considering clear 1/4" typically goes for $7-8.

If you can't buy cheaper in USA, it is an alternative at least.

Tried TAP Plastics yet? Here's a link to their colored stuff: http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=340&

A bit pricey for 1/4" stock though. However, another option is to sandwich two 1/8" sheets together using some IPS Weld-On #3 or #4 to get your 1/4" thick sheet. You might be able to save a little money by doing that too. For example, you have two sheets of 1/8" acrylic, one of them being regular cheap-o clear acrylic and the other being solid black. Cement the two together and you've essentially got a 1/4" piece of black acrylic. I've done it before, it works pretty good.

...But if money is no object and you'd rather not bother with it, just shell out for the one 1/4" black sheet.
