iBook recycling (portable console?)

Post by papaslides »

Hello all, I am the lucky owner of one of those infamous bad-graphics processor iBooks. I don't want to just sell it off, and all my fix it plans have had moderate success leaving me with a still useless iBook (I can boot it up now but if I move it it crashes ). So I want to do something with it that will be cool.

The best idea I could come up with (besides the tried and true, immobile server thought, which I don't want or need) was to turn it in to some sort of portable console, perhaps a PS2 or XBox. Think about the possibilities, a mobile console with it's own battery and LCD. Here's the issue, I don't know jack about this kind of stuff and so can't move past the concept phase.

My question, is this possible? Is there any console with hardware small enough to fit into the casing of 14" iBook? Could someone with the proper knowledge hardwire the LCD/Battery(and power supply)/Optical drive to that hardware?

I could use any thoughts, tips, suggestions, references, anything for what to do with this machine besides server or paperweight.

Thanks!!

Well, you could look at Ben's guide to building an XBox laptop, but I dunno if you could fit it into an ibook. The parts a fairly large and for him to even do it, he had to build a custom case.

A thin PS2 might fit. To make space you could through out the keyboard for more room inside.

Guys, an iBook is just over 1" thick when CLOSED. It's freakin' thin! it'll be hard to get components to fit into the shell, trust me.

I did the DIY fix on my iBook with great success (reflow the solder with heat gun). It took a couple tries to get it right, though. I'd say give it another shot.... or two. Be patient with it.

This is a really old thread, and there is no way any console would work. To start with, it is not economically possible to reuse the lcd so stop whatever plans you had, and please, leave old threads lie...
