Removing the Expansion Port -- Explained...

Post by comp_wizard306 »

Arite, it's tempting to remove that expansion port and relatively easy to do without desoldering. However if you do, you will create quite a bit of work for yourself.

The expansion port ties the cartridge port (on top, the one the game connects too) to the actual cartridge data interface (better terminology??).

If you remove the expansion port, on the bottom, you will have to solder the cartridge port pins to the outer holes where the expansion port was connected to get a data connection so that a game will play again.

I've tested this theory with the multimeter and much trial and error. If anyone believes differently, please explain.

I just pulled the plastic thing off and bent off the metal pins :)

That is exactly how I removed the exp. port as well, but when you put the cartridge port (top port back on) you will not be able to play a game. the holes in the board don't make a connection, they rely on the pins you broke off for the connection.

Therefore you will have to find a way to connect the cartridge port to each adjacent pin... As described above.

If you aren't planning on moving the cart. port just stick it back in the holes, bend the pins so they contact the exp. port traces, and solder :)

Ok, Im glad this is indeed the case... Initially I was a little bit confused about the whole issue, which is why I figured I'd post to clarify it for everyone out there fighting the N64 all the way to portabalization.
