Hey fellas! Haven't posted here in a while, but I've finally got something to contribute. I call this lil' guy "CANCER". (Custom Acrylic Nintendo Controll... er).
As the name would suggest, the casing and buttons are entirely plexiglass. Went for a knob in place of the d-pad, which I've actually come to prefer. It's a little bit thicker than the original NES controller, but it feels a lot better in my hands. More natural. ...Plus there's a back-lit logo, yadda yadda blah blah. Have some more pictures.

Where did you get red acrylic from?
Yup! Replaced the d-pad with a 4-direction tac switch and affixed a little acrylic dome on top. (Same with the other buttons). As for the red acrylic... my roommate brought it home from school or something. I guess that had some laying around. However, you can get acrylic in all sorts of different colors, transparent and opaque, from TAP Plastics for example. In fact, I'm going to be building a case for another project pretty soon using transparent bronze acrylic. It looks pretty neat!

They're referred to as "multi-control" switches. You can get them at mouser.com, part number 688-SKQUAA or 688-SKQUCA for example. (I think the only difference between those two is the length of the little stick). Oh, and they also have a center-push button function.
ALPS makes a ton of different types of multi-control switches. (Some of them 8-direction as well). Those two I listed I think are just the more basic ones. Relatively cheap too.
if you wanted to too you could use a razor from acidmods they do the same thing for you and dont really ware out. theres tuts also you could just use a ps2 stick and turn the analog into a monetary switch system.
but the pics are broken so it might be a bit hard to understand basically yuou just have to dremel the insides of the green things so thast the solid lines is severed if i must i could try to put up pics of mine late havent tested it yet though.
Thanks for the tip on the multi-control switches! I hate cutting the hole for a d-pad. I can never get it just right! That's why I usually wind up bondo-ing in the original controller. However, one of those suckers would be perfect for a very compact portable... Hmm...
