I don't know how many of you have seen or heard of the XIM (Xbox input machine), but I'd like to do something similar for the PS3. The XIM works with the PS3 if you've got the right adapter, but not all PS2->PS3 controller adpaters work properly with the XIM (there are only 2 that have been confirmed to work properly thus far). Furthermore, the creator of the XIM has said that he doesn't care to make the XIM work properly with the PS3 and he won't release his source (not too surprising, and I don't blame him). So, I'd like to make something similar that would function with a wider range of adapters, or possibly remove the adapter all together.
For the last few weeks, I've been using a Smartjoy Frag and a PS2->PS3 controller adapter to use a keyboard and mouse on COD4, and it works great. The Smartjoy Frag, which is a keyboard and mouse adapter originally made for the PS2, uses nothing more that a PIC 16F819 to read the mouse and keyboard commands and transfer them into the PS2 controller protocol, as well as store up to 10 separate button configurations. I know that if I looked in the right places, I could probably find the smartjoy's firmware and I could probably get away with using it since Lik-Sang is out of business now. However, since I want to make this freely available to all PS3 users, I want to avoid that method.
I'm a pretty confident coder, and I can handle all the coding. I just need some help with understanding the controllers data protocol as well as how to interface with the keyboard and mouse and translate the raw data into something more useful. Does anyone feel like helping out?
anyone know about PICs and want to help out?
