PSOneP: Finally done! Golly gee whiz!

Post by Life of Brian »

Okay, this project has been sitting on my desk for MONTHS. I finally got around to figuring out what my problem was with the controls - apparently the 7 wires for the original controllers don't connect in order to the controller input on the PSOne's board (on which there are 9 connections). Lesson learned, and notes taken.

Now: pictures and a video!

This picture makes the paint look really dark. It's actually lighter than navy blue. I love this shade of blue and I plan on using it for many more future projects.

Nice and compact!

YouTube video! Yes, this another one of those "I don't like the sound of my voice so I'm not going to talk during a video of something I made" videos. You know what I'm talking about. If you listen real closely at 1:44 you'll hear my roommate...

"Making of" thread

Just a few notes about this portable:

1) If I were to spend more time on this portable, I would probably replace the buttons on the back with either larger diameter tact switches or work in the original shoulder buttons. As it is, these work just fine.

2) I'm pretty proud of how I made the power plug. Heat-shrink tubing is wonderful! I use it whenever I can because it's loads better than electrical tape in every way. More professional look to it, too!

3) Unfortunately, the buttons are somewhat glitchy. On occasion some of the buttons will behave as though more than one is pressed, such as R1 and R2. Pressing either behaves as though both are being pressed at the same time. I took the system apart and reassembled it about five times in one evening trying to pinpoint where the short is and how to fix it, but the best I could get it to is "passable". Honestly it's something that can be fixed quite easily - it's just a matter of finding where something's touching.

It's a nice portable but I expected better from you  Just curious how much are you looking for it?

I guess I'll take that as a compliment... I think.

I don't see anything wrong with it, other than the tact switches without buttons over them. Nice portable Brian!
Meh, I don't post much.

I think what he means is that he expected an awesome custom case like the SNES.

Well then, you should be pleasantly surprised when I reveal my next PSOne portable...

The main reason I built this was because I bought a PSOne from someone who had attempted such a case mod. I'm not going to name names but the work was awful - both the case and buttons were useless. I was so disappointed and frustrated at wasting my money that I decided I'd build one to prove that I could make one better. After making the case, I got distracted with other projects and life (as usual) and the empty shell remained on my desk for months. I finally found another original PlayStation controller (messed up the first one - bad cutting) and decided to sit down and finish the thing.

Besides, everyone needs a fairly easy project to do every now and then. If I felt that everything I make needs to be a masterpiece, I wouldn't enjoy what I do. Fitting the controls into the PSOne was actually more difficult than making my first SNESp's entire case. I might replace the back buttons someday, but for now this project is done.

Very impressive and clean case mod. The two tone PSone, really makes it stand out, a very nice looking portable overall. How well do the tact switches work?

They work just fine, but the small diameter of the buttons is a problem. If you grip them too hard, they kind of dig into your finger tips. What I really need is some of those larger diameter tact switches that bacteria used on his N64 - those look like the perfect size. I think I'll order some...
