PC powering problems

Post by ganonbanned »

Hello,
Sadly, the computer I am using for my doom arcade has run amok. right when I think my OS problems are solved, my brother started screwing around with it (After I told him not to touch it), after I went to school this morning. Now, whenever I turn it on, it stays on for about 30 seconds and than shuts off. some times it doesnt even power up at all. does anybody know what to do?

thanks

I would check to make sure your heatsink is properly seated and has good contact with the processor (and that the fan is actually running) as my first approach. Also, check to see if the north bridge seems to be getting really hot, you may need to position a fan so that it is blowing air over the north bridge. from there I would try swapping out the power supply and seeing if that fixes the problem.

before going to all that work you might also want to try booting it with some sort of liveCD (maybe knoppix or something else) and seeing if the problem happens while running something other than the OS you have installed, if you don't have problems then, it's possible that your brother messed up some setting on the computer or added a program that is screwing things up.

Recheck all your connections, if they are all correct, try taking out the power supply and reinserting it, if that doesn't work, buy a new power supply, Drag it down to the computer store and have them fix it. Either way make your brother pay for it.
