Voltage Regs and ICs
I have a question. Im attaching one of those 7.2v 3000mah rc batteries to my Atari. The first time I ordered a 7805 that could only handle 1 amp. When I attached it to my battery it melted, (literally
) Anyway I now have a 7805 that can handle 3 amps. This is my question. I know my 7805 wont get damaged by the battery but will all my ICs on my atari board get fried when I put in 3A? I know what current is and all that but since the 3A melted my 7805 I was wondering wheather it would fry my (expensive
) IC's. Any input would be appreacated. Thanks.
The amperage is what the system runs on. Only voltage fries the system. Dont worry about amps, unless you think the battery time is too low.

You have it connected right? because that shouldnt happen with using such low voltage compared to what it (says) can handle.

hooking up the battery backwards
wiring up the regulator incorrectly
insufficient heat sinking
A normal 7805 is only rated to handle 1 amp with a big enough heat sink - without any, even half an amp is too much. So get a chunk of aluminum with fins on it and bolt it on there! Even your 3 amp version may be overstressed without a heat sink.

Mum! Dad! Don't touch it! It's EEE-VIL!

2 I think it was the heat sink. Since my origional question I have aquired a heatsink. Thanks for trying to help out though! Lol, that question was from when I was a major "n00b".

well, don't worry about it to much, we were all once "n00bs" to portablization.......(I myself had some pretty stupid questions on the old forums
....I've definitely come a long way since then on learning the ways of portablization
)
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!
