Wireless switch/access point?

Post by HomicidalBarber »

Hey guys, I am looking for something that will act as a wireless networking switch, would I want an access point? I am already behind a router. I don't want it to have its own MAC address. Im in a dorm at my school and our bandwidth is limited and tracked by our MAC address so a router wont work. So what I want to do is have both of my computers on wireless and have the network see the computer mac address, not what the wireless is coming from. Also, it needs some sort of security like WEP or WPA. I tried to make it understandable, its kind of complicated. Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Or do I want a range extender? Like

if you buy a normal wireless router, dont plug anything into the WAN port, but connect one of its switch ports to the existing router, it will function as an AP.

thats how mine is set up.

the only issue you might run into is it assigning you the wrong default gateway (itself) instead of the real router. so set up a static IP.

any computers accessing the wireless AP just show up in the other router as they normally would.

Alright, I will try that, thanks. Does it have to be a cross over cable?

If your switch or your school's switch isn't auto sensing then yes, you would need a crossover cable. The quickest way to tell is to plug a normal cable in, and see if it lights up. :) Or the box that your new wireless switch/router comes in will say auto sensing on it somewhere.
