What gauge of wire is best for use in a portable? Specifically a noac portable using a hip gear...

Depends on the parts, I normally use 28-30 awg for a/v & data, but 26-28 for power.

Along the same lines, if I'm using wire bigger than necessary, is it wasting more energy? Or does it take more energy to get the signal thru a bigger wire?

I am no electrical engineer....

With a portable, you can use as small a gauge as you want, and it will have no negative effect on anything.

Same thing goes for big wire. You can use power line cable if you so desired, and were able to hook it up.

As for wasted energy? Very little, with any gauge. Consider it negligible.
