^sometime what i do in tight spaces is to melt a bit of solder on the tip of the iron and then just stick that blob where i need it!

do i have to buy some kind of metal? i just got the soldering iron, do i need anything else?

^you can get soldering braid and solder at ratshack (radioshack)
