How to hold custom mades together...?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

How to hold custom mades together...?

Post by Skyone »

This is what I want to do:

Code: Select all

______________________ < Plexi

|||||||||||||||||||||| < Sheet Metal
|||||||||||||||||||||| < Sheet Metal
______________________< Plexi
Basically, wrap sheet metal around two plexis an hold them together.

I most likely want screws, and I'm thinking about doing something like this:

Code: Select all

______________________
|||||||||||||||||||||| < Sheet Metal and One Plexi Glued Together
||||||||||||||||||||||
______________________ < Detachable Plexi
How do I get screws to hold it together though!?

You mean wrap plexi around sheet metal?

If it's on a flat surface, just get a drill head (it's a special kind that's angled) and drill a hole in one of the plexi to make a nice flush hole for the angled screw head. then drill a hole through the metal.

Then there's 2 possibilities:

- Drill it in the metal so that you can thread the screw through it, like a heat sink screw.

- Do the nut/screw sorta like Ben does. Explained here with code:

Code: Select all

____ __ ____
___[|__|]____ <== Plexi with a rounded off nut superglued into the hole
 ===|__|===   <= Metal 1 with a hole
 ===|__|===   <= Metal 2 with a hole
___/____\____  <= Other plexi sheet

      /\
   Screw here (grow up kiddies)
Hope this helps, it was hell to draw :P

You could also screw through both sides into a threaded inset inside the case. That way you aren't depending on the glue as much to hold it together plus you will have that cool "industrial" look to it.

Actually, with my way you don't really need the glue if you think about it. The nut is being forced down, not up.
