Vac Forming A Positive.

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Vac Forming A Positive.

Post by Kurt_ »

Just an idea. It probably wouldn't be too good for a portable, and I could see some error in the idea already, but here it goes:

Melt the plastic and such as if you were doing a normal vac-form case. But instead of molding 2 negative halves, mold the plastic AROUND the electronic components.

Here's some problems:

1) Screen. Where does it go?
2) Bottom. The bottom wouldn't have much plastic covering it.

Idea:

Put the screen on the bottom and hope to god the plastic doesn't cover it. Or possibly have some sort of barrier.

The parts would have to form a convex polygon or they would be stuck in the plastic. If you've done any vac forming, you'll understand what I mean.

I know what you mean. I neglected to mention you make a shanty version of the case out of cardboard or soemthing around your system.

(Well no I didn't, but now that I think about it holding a pile of mis-shapen plastic wouldn't be very comfortable)

I tried to make the bust out of cardboard once, it doesn't work (the vacuum pressure crushes it when you bring the plastic down.

Hmm...perhaps if you made a plastic positive mold and then vac formed over the mold! :P

If there is a way it would look so great since there would be no seams or outer screw holes. But then again, you'd still need to make room for the speakers/screen to stick out. Not to mention all the buttons.

This might work for other things, but for our purposes it's just not practical or realistic. Maybe it's locking time? It's up to you.

I dunno. This thread is going to die soon anyways, and I feel that if it's locked I won't just watch it die like the rest of them.

If it's locked, it's more like it had some sort of funeral, and if it isn't it was just left to rot in the bottom on the forum.

But I'm insane. I don't know about other people.
