I don't know if it was called the 7600, but there WAS a 7800 prototype designed in 1984, but it was canned when the new owner of Atari(Jack Tramiel, the former owner of Commodore Computers) decided to abandon games and stick with home computer systems. It was brought back in a hurry in 1987, but downgraded and rushed.

The original 7800 Prototype supposedly had these things...

Purple hologrpahic coating of plastic
Keyboard attachment
2600 compatability(preserved in production models)
possible modem(?)

It could have been reasonable to call it the 7600....
Warranty-Voiding fun!
