Thanks for all the feed back.
I have been working on it for a few weeks on and off, mostly waiting for supplies to arrive. All you see in the pic is about 6 hours work spread over 4 days.
I have an idea what the case will look like, sorta gameboyish style. I am working it out in Maya right now.
I am going to wire the controller as soon as I more precisely measure out the final dimensions of the whole thing.
About the problems...many. First I relocated the caps, wired it to the screen and batteries and fired it up. Nothing. So I checked and rechecked all the connections, still nothing. Then I thought the batteries may not be charged, and they weren't. (They were brand new!) Charged them, fired it up again; the screen worked but no response from the SNES. At that point I was at a loss, until I consulted the forums and learned that the ground is labeled wrong\different in Ben's book. From there I attached it to the real ground and what do you know ITS ALIVE. And before all of that, I killed a PSone screen trying to install the LED mod. (Something happened to the ribbon cable)

His book says that that 2 on the SNES board in that picture is ground, and its not.

Oh it's definitely mislabeled - I had the same problem with my first portable. I was so sad at the time because I was sure I had everything wired correctly but it still wouldn't turn on. I then learned how to use a multimeter for testing continuity and figured it out myself.

Yes you could ground the lead from the LEDs to the same spot.
A microscopic update: I have wired the controller successfully and cut out the front panel. But unfortunately I have to rewire the cart port (blah). The ethernet cord wires I used are too rigid. Thats why in the pictures the game looks like its floating.
