If you have a trackball, Marble Madness is a good one to at least try out

...And I would recommend the Metal Slugs, but they've been recommended already, no suprise

Well, ignoring the fact that you probably won't be getting ANY of these games legally, here are my personal fave. arcade picks:

Last Blade series
XMEN (the 4 player variant)
Assault (Cool tank game)
Neo Turf Masters (The voice-overs are sublime "ON THE GWEEN!")
P.O.W.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
and if you like Metal Slug, you need to try In the Hunt, it was made by the same team as Metal Slug before they came off of Irem.

Of course you absolutely must at least try Metal Slug if you have not yet seen it. Believe the hype, the first Metal Slug is so good it's actually worth buying the real arcade cartridge.
Emulation isn't accurate. There is no substitute for real hardware!

Don't mix vertical and horizontal games. Ever.

Super Mario is a nes game.
Mario Bros is an arcade game, a horizontal one at that.

Pac-Man, Galaga, DK 1-3, Pengo, Dig Dig, etc. are vertical.

Turtles, Simpsons, and any fighting game are horizontal.

I hear this a lot from people, but I've been mixing vertical and horizontal games for a while, I'm just fine with it. A big part of it is the size screen I'm using, but it's also personal preference. One of the joys of MAME is that you don't even have to make a final decision on this until after you've built the cabinet. Stick a bunch of games on there and if one doesn't play right or doesn't look good to you, just pull it off.

Super Mario Bros. is/was available as an arcade game as a playchoice 10 game.

Vs. Super Mario Bros is an arcade game.

The Vs. series is basically NES games on the arcade. Look for almost any famous NES game, but put Vs. in front.

I know about the VS games, but I'm just saying that "Super Mario Bros" by itself is technically a different game.

The VS system was actually NES hardware, but each game had it's own PPU palette, so it is hard to get the games running on a regular NES. It is possible, however.

Yep and I own it just for clarification.
