Battleship 64! *UPDATED 04/22/06: R.I.P. Orangy*

Post by blackbox_dev »

OK, somebody (littlemal I believe) said something about using a battleship board for the case of your portable. That's what I'm going to do for my N64p, called the BATTLESHIP 64! I won't be able to build it 'till the summer comes though, but whatever! I want to share my design with you guys.

By the way, the Z button there is actually going to go on the back so you can control it with your middle finger.

Warning! Big image alert!

nice design! Z should be on the left though because that's where it is on the controllers and it would be really wierd on the right

@Fanboy: I just modded a pic of a seal with a Pancake on its head! Coinicidence?
@Jeroen: I don't think the screen is upside down. I took the picture off of BenWiki.
@Daguuy: I look the Z button on the right. Being right handed it feels more normal to me. (and I always used my right hand on it on the original controller)

EDIT: On N64 controllers Z is in the middle... So, whatcha sayin' there?

I meausured it out, it'll fit, but the jumper/expansion pack is going to have to stick out the back. Also, I'm going to relocate the cart slot so that the cart sticks out of the top. (but it won't slide down the back at all.

*UPDATE*

I designed how I'm going to arrange the guts. I'm pretty sure the diagram is completely to scale, as I must of spent half an hour with a ruler just measuring, measuring again, and carefully quadruple checking my measuring. Anyways, the mobo in the picture is upside down for a reason, so that the expansion pak will stick out the back. Also, the memory pak is going to stick out the back. The slot as you can see is right behind the 'Start' button. The reason it is so thin is that only the PCB is going to stick out. Then I'll probably use a small aluminum box to cover up both of them. Anyways, on with the picture, proving that it will all be stuffable (but maybe with a bit of dremeling needed, but nothing that will make it unrecognizable as a Battleship case)

By the way, I had to ditch the D-Pad because of the needed space for batteries. Also, because the image is for my personal usage pretty much only, it is not labeled because I already knew what everything was. So just figure it out yourself. Finally, most of the pics of boards and stuff are courtesy of anotherperson.

Also, I have decided it will either be called the Battleship 64, or B-Ship 64. I was thinking of calling it the 'BS64' but you can probably see the obvious reason not. :P

Until next time, happy portabalizing, and may the force be with you!

No, the BS64 sounds good. There was BSZelda for the SNES, so there needs to be a BS for the 64.

I still haven't quite decided over those $20 or $30 ones. Hell, maybe I'll go find those 15 minute rechargable ones, but all I know is that i'm using AAs. So as of right now, batteries havn't been chosen right now.

And yes, I'm going to use some nice perfboard and tact switches. Their pretty cheap at Digikey.

Yes, this is a double post. But here's an update:

Today my multimeter Orangy bit the dust and died. Oh well, looks like I'll have to go get a new one soon.

Also, I decided that I'm going to go with some high amperage C batteries for the portable, they will be strapped on the back of the case (not inside) and will be covered by an aluminum frame. By doing this I gain extra space inside the case and I will be able to include the D-Pad again. Hooray!

That's all for now, and until next time, may the force be with you! *sigh*, am I going to day taht every time I update this?

I also think the "Z" button should be on the back where it originally would be, or maybe that's just me? :P
