Dreamcast Seemless NES pad controller

Post by -=FamilyGuy=- »

11up gimme a great idea 2 days ago, by doing a Nes controller mod to his DC controller, using a lan cable.

I told myself ,seeing his stuff, : OMG, I could use the *useless* vmu 2de port as a hub for custom controllers !

So i did. I cuted the vmu port pins and linked them to the corresponding buttons of my Dreamast controller (and its ground) then modded a Nes pad by removing the controller chip and putting wires in the corresponding holes of all the buttons (and ground) then connect it to the same pins as my controlelr's ones using a rumble pack shell.

It works perfectly... To play elevator action with a nes pad is better than with a DC pad, don't you think ? And the way I did it, no one would notice sketchy holes in your controller.

note: vmu 2de port can't be used anymore for anything else that nes controller, Snes controller would be feasible too, and a psone controlelr would be possible using the 2 vmu ports.

Good work! This is way impressive and you should send it to devcast to see what they think. Its a great improvement on the main idea and everything looks great. The only thing that i dont like about it is that the nes's cord isnt black but i dont think anyone else would care. again great job!

Well, devcast seems abandonned ...

about the nes cable... I simply didn't find any black serial cable ... and I wanted to do it as soon as possible, I agree it'd be cooler black .. I'd maybe paint it ...

Thank you !

Amazing work Family Guy! :D I love it man! With or without my ideas, what you did was pure genius, this is WAY less complicated than rigging up a lan cable! Now I wanna do this mod your way and putty up the hole I made in my controller  . By the way, I like the white cable you used :D , I think it looks cool. You did a great job man! Awesome work!

Very nice. You just can't get that old look and feel with modern controllers when playing emulators.

More pictures please.

Thank you all !

@dudex77: Thank you but my english isn't perfect ... I said "cuted" and things like that .. but I do my best :P

@11up: Not that much less complicated ... you got wires coming from one side to the other of the controller and you need to cut (well, I've needed to) some plastic inside the controller itself for it to close correctly :P

@Sparkfist:

I can post internal pictures ...

Thank you all for the comments ... I might do a direct nes Dreamcast controller one day ( like this mod but wihtout the dc host .. a nes pad that plugs into a dc literrally ...) but i'd only do it if I can get my hands on a cheap astropad controller ... wich I'd be able to fit in a nes controller :D But so far I only got one astropad and it's reserved for my DCp :)

Thank you again !

oooh thats what im gonna do! im going to see if i can squeeze an astropad into a snes pad and have the memory card ports coming out the back or the top of the controller

Wow Family Guy, you have done a very great job on the wiring and soldering! :D (Especially when compared to my hack job  ) Here's a pic of it and a new paint job! (Guess what theme.) Image
What I meant to say earlier, was that the way you did the mod is easier to do than the way I did it. I've been trying to keep the lan port, (and put a rubber plug over it) and yet mod the 2an port like you did, but the wiring around the plug keeps getting in the way. Otherwise, this would be a little easier to do than write out a chart, intently stare at pins, and etc...doing the lan cable mod. Oh, by the way, I looked at the whole "wire a battery to ground" I suggested earlier in another thread, and saw that both polarities can't travel in the same wire. I should have known better to suggest that.
Neat! I didn't know there were smaller DC controllers :D . This gives me some good ideas.
Once again Family Guy, awesome work!

11up, just letting you know the astropad's case is the largest controller ive ever seen. Seriously, its bigger than the duke. The pcb however is quite small and already in seperate parts. The ascii pad is the smallest you can get in a controller as far as i know, but its missing the analog stick. I decided against the dc pad in a snes controller since i have no idea how to make the analog stick digital or if its possible so i want to make a controller thats in two parts like how triton? made in the bondo off with a nes controller. The dpad, 'l' and analog stick on the left half which connects to the right half, that would have a vmu connector at the bottom (which would be used as the connector between the two controllers) whcih would have the face buttons 'r', start, and a vmu port or two at the top
