Snes project, (thead attempt 2)

Post by NeX »

Right, hi all, i am still new here and still doing a snes project, but my original thread got no replies.............

like i said before i am normally into things that are already portable, such as gameboys, but the reason i ended up with this snes idea is because i would like to make a Super gameboy portable. to do this i want to fit an entire snes inside a gameboy. this is a lot of work but i am determined.

so far i have the snes small enough to fit in the gameboy, i also have it running off 4 aa batteries and i have moved the cartridge slot but now i have two problems that i would like help with.

problem one is that there is a lot of noise on the audio since moving the cartridge slot, has anyone else had this?

and i cant seem to get the screen to work on batteries, it switches on and off as if it doesn't have enough power to stay on. any ideas on how to test a screen to get it running on batteries? or maybe a small screen that is known to work?

but anyway i know how you people work, you like pics yea? well here is some of my project:

looking good so far! I'm actually going to start a SNESp soon as well. any tips to cut down the board size?

And for your battery problem try some lithium polymer batteries.

i dont want to use anything other than normal batteries, the screen can do it because there is 5 volts all over the board, but i cant get it to boot.

this is an NTSC board, its a snes mini i got directly from japan,

i cut the board down with a rotary tool, i tested it with a meter, and lifted tracks as well as removing or relocating components and it works fine except for the audio buzz

wow, i had no idea you used an snes mini for this thing! very impressive man. your best bet to power it would be a couple lipoly batteries, as 4AAs probably wont cut it voltage wise, the snes mini can run on 5v or a little less just fine but the voltage drop on rechargable AAs is pretty big, i tested it once, and the snes mini shuts off at around 4.2 volts and the lcd is probably less tolerant to low voltage, and since that battery pack would only be supplying 4.8v to start with you can see where this could cause problems. rechargable AAs voltage can drop quite a bit when they are under heavy load like a portable would have. and non rechargable ones dont have enough juice to last very long at all

yea here is some build pics if you are interested:

i used some nicad batteries as i had them lying around, but i haven't done a full test to see how long they last.

i actually used the step mode power regulator from the original gameboy, its able to keep a true 5v even when the batteries drop to as low as 3v i think, maybe even less, its a very good regulator. i used it to power the backlight too as it has an 18v output too

you are welcome :) there is a smaller regulator in the gameboy pocket but it might not be as strong i haven't fully tested it yet.

is your converter the one marked "DC CONV DMG"? if so where are you getting 18v out of it? i havent had the time to sit down and test it yet

yep its the big board down the side, VCC is from the battery, GND is ground, - is the 18v in reverse and + is 5v

to get 18v you need to wire up as if ground is positive and 18v is the ground.

the original multi socket, its wired up on the left but a bit hard to see in the dark, obviously all that is gone now,
