Sculpt "Friendly Plastic"

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Sculpt "Friendly Plastic"

Post by CJWJ »

Hi peeps,

I just dug up this from a sculpting site.

http://www.sculpt.com/catalog_98/craft/craft.htm#friend

It's a bucket of small plastic pellets. When put into hot water they mold and become soft. Once cooled, it's supposedly tough as a rock.

On a similar note, there's also "ShapeLock". Less expensive for more dollars, but on the website it also claims to be paintable / machineable after "setting/cooling down".

I already have my plans layed out, so it's not much good for me, but maybe for the newcomers on the board it's good for case construction?

That's actually pretty cool. I might get some even if I'm not using/REusing it for a portable.

Only problem (highly unlikely) is that if your portable produces over 150 F of heat, it'll melt. I think a 7805 from the SNES makes that much without a heat sink. It gets pretty damn hot.

Haha, that would suck if plastic starts dripping while playing a nice game of Super Metroid.

Edit: Just read the pdf for friendly plastic, and it said it will start to soften when it hits direct sunlight, so yeah I don't think its a good idea to buy for portablizing purposes.

Yeh, I thought that would happen.. But anyway, its still cool to make a mold of things from. Maybe an alternative to the ben-hot-glue-effect (use large amounts of hotglue to put everything in place).

Another what-if:
Cover your Portable with it, but still drill holes in it to put two screws (size M4 or similar) through the Friendly plastic and through the case front and/or side walls. Then "deliberately" put it in direct sunlight. Grasp the portable, and let it cool down. Instant ergonomic pluspoints for your portable.

(don't ask what I just smoked :P )
