Charging Ni-MH by plugging it in?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Charging Ni-MH by plugging it in?

Post by Kurt_ »

Do you need a special charger to charge Ni-MH?
Or can I set up a circuit similar to this one?

Since I'm using 12 AA's...it would sort of be a pain to take out and charge...

Sorry about the crossed lines.

If this does work what voltage/current would I ahve to pump into the circuit to charge it?

you need a charger but it might work (might, ask somebody else) if you charged them at the same time but all in parrallel (with a NiMH chrger of course

Highly doubt it'll work, be VERY careful, or just buy a charger.

you'd need a resistor to limit the current going into the cells so they don't catch on fire.

to avoid confusing people, stick to the convention red-positive black-negative.

anyhow. it can be done. like gannon said. you need a resistor. also, even though overcharging nimh batteries isnt as dangerous as li-ions, they can still explode if you blatantly overcharge them for hours on end. the stuff inside them is mostly not dangerous (battery acid is really not as dangerous as its made out to be) compared to lithium... but youd still be destroying your batteries. even if they dont explode, they will lose capcity.

a proper battery charger detects the voltage spike that indicates the end of charging, and shuts off. buy one or build one:

theres nothing wrong with charging batteries in series, but over time their voltages will start to be slightly different. you might end up cycling only one of them really deep, while the pack as a whole still looks fine. this isnt a safety hazard with nimh (as it is with li-ion) but, once again... youre destroying your battery life.
