Pretty much any kind of wire as long as its insulated and is a high gauge (thin).

Yeah, probably. If it's too hard to bend and twist it, you'll need thinner wire but that should work fine.

I'd go with braided, solid wire always breaks off on me.
controller wire is fine, for a good while I was cutting apart parallel cables, and then I found out that that "wire" came on handy "spools"
