Using the switching regulator

I obtained the switching regulator suggested in the book and downloaded the schematics for this IC. The book doesn't show a very good diagram of the application. Do I need to us the "ss, sync, and on/off" pins for this application? I have a breadboard (with a power supply) I can use to test any set up.
Only the great ones remember.
