PSonep SE Rev. 3 concept art

Post by bicostp »

Well, I haven't built anything yet, but here's the revision 3 concept drawing:

Thje larger, detailed view is thefront od the unit, I don't think I need to explain.

The rectangle on the side is the top view, where the battery will slide into the unit, and where I plan on adding a modular expansion port, which would accept either a NOAC, or a GOAC expansion cartridge. Th the unit there would be a 5.25" floppy drive connector, into which modified VCS carts would go. The carts would use a standardized connection to tap into the 12v, and 8v connections, along with the composite and audio lines. The system would have a SPDT switch which would power either both the PSone and the screen or just the screen, for playing the expansion games. It would, of course, have AV output for playing any of the games on a TV. (I'd leave the screen's power switch intact so I could turn it off when using it as a console.)

Not pictured is the Player 2 controler port, which would probably end up on the bottom of the system.

Design conciderations
--------------------------------------------------------

1. The battery I want to use is about as big as the PSone motherboard and a half-inch thick. But it's 4500mah, which is 2x more than my RC battery.

2. It shoudl be able to fit in a very large pocket or in a camcorder bag or something.

3. I still need to figure out how exactly to position the shoulder buttons. I may wind up putting them on a CD cover, if I include one.

4. I don't really want to build a vacumn-form table because this is the only thing I'd use it for, and I don't like frankencases as much as I like the hand-built plastc cases. (I think I have some palstic around somewhere...)

Any questions? comments? suggestions?

Vacuum forming is not all that great. All it does is make a box the size and shape you want, no more. Then once you have the box you have to cut out holes for the control plastic pieces, screen holder, cd drive, etc and glue them in place, then fill the gaps with bondo/glue.
It's really just the same as frankensteining except you can decide how you want the case to be shaped. If you are trying to keep it as small as possible, then you will probably want a rectangle shape the same size as the PSone mobo. Well, if you want a rectangle, then you might was well just find a box with the dimensions you want. It will be straighter, sturdier (since its made of ABS), and easier to work with, not to mention cheaper. Anyways that's just my 2 c.

I think I have some ABS sheets in the shed, and I know we have some old aluminum lying around, so there's no shortage of parts.

However there's a probvlem with the shape of the battery; it has a bump on the bottom with the terminals on it. It looks like this:

Code: Select all

   ,___________________________,___
   | | |
   | Li-ION | |
   | | |
   | 4500mah `---
   | |
   | |
   | |
   | |
   '`'''''''''''''''''''''''''''

So I need a bit of extra length on the unit, which I guess is good for moving ther CD drive a bit... but still it's a bit of a pain.

I do have a 9v RC battery, but it's only 1800mah and it's the evil Ni-Cad type, so this is my best option (I don't want to spend tons of extra money on this. :P)

In the end it's probably going to come out something like the cnc PSonep from the book, but more amateur-ish, not cnc routed (jigsaw and router routed ) and no analog sticks. I don't like analog sticks, and I only know a couple games that really need them.
