When you take apart an n64 controller there are little metal plates that are separated in the middle and when you push the button it connects them. Does anyone know if you can buy printed circuits like that and just solder the leads to the controller board?

you can just use tactile buttons.
if you want the circuit, you can salvage them from an old television remote.

When you've butchered as many third party controllers as I have, you end up with a collection of those stupid things. They are basically a tiny silicon board with the two halves printed on there. One goes to ground and the other goes to power.
Problems is to use them you have to find some way to mount them securely and then have the button sit over it with one of those rubber push pads. It also has to stay in one place and not turn in the hole so that the button symbol gets upside down. Nobody wants to play with a portable that has the A and the B button sideways, right.
SO in short they are a pain in the ass. Get tactile buttons, mount them below inside the case. And glue your real N64 buttons to them with hot glue so that they stick up through the hole and don't turn.
