Xbox 360 laptop case material [ACRILIC}

Post by ssmith43654 »

Here int he UK it is very hard to get sintra (foamex) that is used for the case sides and display. But I have discovered that it is possible to get acrylic in 20mm thickness - if I get two would they be suitable to make the case sides + display housing or is is too brittle. Also how will I stick the two pieces together - could I use a type of strong plastic cement that "melts" the pieces together(can't remember the name!!) or something else.

Suggestions on what to do would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks.

Acrylic is a nightmare when it comes to gluing, as it leaks over the sides and with Super Glue, it INSTANTLY grabs so you have no time to move the pieces into position.

It is also quite brittle. I mean, if you drop the thing it will instantly just crack and or shatter. The same thing goes for drilling too. When you do, drill very slow and do not apply pressure. It also helps to have a SHARP drill bit too :mrgreen:

Can't you order Styrene (HIPS)? It is much better to work with.

The only problem with styrene(HIPS) is that it only comes in 3mm thickness' and I need a 30mm thickness board, so i will need to glu 30 together. Is there any other way of cutting acrylic(e.g with a jigsaw or a hot wire to melt it?) Do you thing polystyrene would work(more dense stuff than the normal polystyrene)?

Thanks for you'r advice o Acrylic!!

Yes. A Bandsaw and or Jigsaw will work.

However, be sure to let the blade cool down, as when I was using the Jigsaw, the blade got hot and it would not cut - just melt the Acrylic and get stuck :?
