Google Problems

Post by Joes2Silly »

Okay, here's the problem: whenever I click on a google link, about half the time it sends me to some random weird BS site. It works fine when I manually copy the URL into the bar at the top (whatever it's called). I tried running spybot search and destroy, immunized my PC, and then ran hijackthis! but couldn't find anything redirecting my links. What do you guys think is the problem?

I think you should try a different web browser and post your results.

Okay, right now I'm flip floppin' between 2 computers, one in my work area and one in our computer room, so when I get the chance I'll try that.

Sure enough, it didn't redirect any of the links I clicked on in IE (currently using and posting in firefox). What exactly does this mean? Besides the obvious fact that it is a browser specific problem....

I would back up your bookmarks etc and reinstall, and see if that fixes it.

Okay, I'm posting from my workstation computer again, but next time I'm in the computer room I'll give it a try! Thanks for all the help!

Hmmm... Odd. Try installing an older version of Firefox. Or a newer version, if there is one.

You have the google redirect virus. It's a real pain in the ass. It does everything that's happened to you. I had it once before, so I know the frustration you're feeling. Get a top notch security scanner to find and eliminate it. I think I used a trial version of Hitman Pro to get rid of it. Trust me. I'm almost 99.99999 percent sure that you have the dreaded google redirect virus.

Thanks, my mom had a similar problem on her PC, but her virus was more malicious. Not necessarily destructive, just annoying! I'll try to wipe it with hitman pro, thanks for all the help!

Reinstalling firefox will leave your existing profile intact. You would have to make a new firefox profile to see any results.

Nope, it's still giving me issues. Sometimes it even opens a new tab and loads the google homepage. What should I do now?

Run Firefox portable. It contains it all in one folder, and should be a "fresh" installation.
If you need Firefox, of course.
