First, determine the secondary error code:

Re: Red Ring If Death
Well i had rrod just last week luckily it was just overheating (i think) and i left it alone for 5 minutes and saw it had 3 red rings so i ran and put it over a fan in back and under it after 30 minutes it was back to normal but seeing as you left it for days it might be too late quick question what year is your 360? check in the back and if its 2007+ you can still send it to microsoft and theyll do it for you and replace it with a new one and add a year to the warranty

im going to guess it needs a reflow or re-ball

First look into the secondary error code. 2nd check your warranty and if it is at all covered DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX IT. If it isn't under warranty, maybe get a new case for it with a bigger fan and reflow the solder via heat gun (towels are for killing the box). There are many videos on how to do this. From what I have read it seems like a reflow to get it working followed by a bigger case with better heat movement usually fixes this on a permanent basis.
or not so permanent... the only thing that will really fix this is to liquid cool it or do something to get more air movement. FWIW rapid heat gain followed by rapid heat loss is likely to do more damage than good as the solder balls may crack due to the rapid change in temp.

the penny trick is similar to that^
if you are going to attempt a fix DONT overheat it whilst it on!
e.g. the X-clamp fix
the chips can withstand temps up to 90ºc (~194ºF)
any higher and they will shut down and will cause damage to the mobo.
and YES, if it is under warranty send it in!!!
even if the warranty is up call M$ and they should still take the box if the sticker is intact.

Stop saying that

Any word on the code?
Or did you fix it already
