Gamecube N64 Controller

Post by Unidentified Assilant »

Is this possible? I want to convert a Gamecube (or PSX) controller into an N64 one. I hate those official N64 controllers and instead of buying one, I'd like to make my own using those great gamecube ones (possibly unofficial), any thoughts or ideas?

There's no commercially available adapter, and I bet they use totally different data protocols to communicate keypresses to the respective console. You'd have to build a custom interface between the analogue sticks, and good luck doing anything satisfactory for the C buttons/C stick and triggers, but the rest are switches so you'd just have to wire them up (that'd be A, B, d-pad and start, then ;)).

You could use a GC-to-PC converter, then reverse engineer to convert the output to a usable signal.

here's an idea: take out the GC controller chip or whatever and get an n64 controller chip and wire the buttons and stuff to the right spots on it.might need to replace c stick with buttons. i saw a pinout for the chip somewhere but i forgot where :(

If you're going to go to the hassle of reverse-engineering, why bother with the PC converter in the first place?

Not going to work due to the physical hardware differences (there's a reason they're called "analogue" sticks), plus you'd still have to convert the C stick to the C buttons, which would be a nightmare.

Hmm... i have a better idea, make my own controller using a different one (I want the Analog Stick where the D-Pad is)

Please don't say, just replace on a normal N64 controller, or buy one of those superpad things

it wouldnt really be possible to get a pc adaptor for this, since most hardware now adays is software driven, that means a micro controller interface, then you have to engineer a serial to n64 plug, and write software for that, im thinking that u should just learn to deal with the n64 controller?

here's a picture of what i think might work

find a way to make that fit in a GC controller case and replace the C stick with C buttons (those aren't the right pinouts) very crude drawing but you get the point (oops i forgot the D-pad  )

But if you are going to replace the C-stick with buttons, you may as well just move the joystick over and cut the D-pad off.

The D-Pad is required for my favourite N64 game sadly enough :( So it can't take a hike (unless I can convert D-Pad into Analog stick, which probably is possible as some guy managed to convert Playstation D-Pad on a Dual Shock pad so the inputs were converted to Analog Stick, so D-Pad games could be played with Analog Stick)

the point is to put n64 controller guts in a gamecube controller case so it will be like a gamecube controller for n64
