NESp Delight 2.0 worklog (sort of)

Post by thewizdawg »

I started slowly working on the 2nd version of my NESp Delight about 2 months ago and I'm probably about 50% done. This will be one of the portables I will be entering in the Portable-Palooza '09 contest. I'm going to post a full worklog on my blog when I'm finished but wanted to give you all a sneak peak.

Specs
Case - franken-DataMax
Screen - Zenith 5" (unmodded)
NOAC - SuperJoy III (red)
Controls - Beeshu Zipper
Batteries - 6 AA rechargables
72 pin connector to play NES carts

I have the case finished and since LOB likes to tease here is a pic of mine.

I need to wire everything together and test but should be finished in a month then I'm going to work on a SNESp I call the "TigerShark".

I like it! Very slick work with the button holes and incorporating the screen cover and all that.

Well today I started wiring up the batteries and video to the NOAC. Unfortunately now when I power it on the screen is one solid color. Sometimes it's blue, purple, white, or just some garbage on the screen. Anybody seen this before, do you think my NOAC is toast??

Check voltage. double check wiring as well. This could be "noise", in which case, use shielding.

Yes I think you are right, I believe it's a voltage issue. I'm going to triple check everything today.

I charged up the rechargeable batteries last night and rewired everything this morning, carefully checking the voltages at each step. When I tested again I had the same problem. Sometimes solid blue screen, white, or white with bits of garbage on the screen. Luckily I had a spare SJ3 and tested the new board and everything worked first try.

For grins I tested again with the old board and I was able to get the game list to display.. go figure. However I do think something is flaky with the NOAC because when it boots up it says FUN TIME but has bits of garbage on the screen.

Well at least I know what the problem was.

ps. @ yoshilime Yes this is 1 of them.

pss. I probably should go outside today, get some sunlight or something. :)

I have the same problem with my sj3. No idea what's wrong with it, but I blame cheap components and manufacturing.

It's unlikely, but the capacitors may be going bad.

You should check the voltage going through it--the flakeyness might be from a lack of power. I know sometimes my NOACs get flickery and make weird crud on the screen when power gets too low for it.

I'm rounding home. Got everything wired up, tested, and working.

Just need to do some cosmetic changes to the case to make it look pretty and I am done.

The vertical lines seem to be more noticeable with the NOAC. I've read some posts where it was suggested to do Ben's video mod. However I've never seen any results. Does anybody have any experience with this, will it clean up the signal?

ps. I've also changed the formal name to NOACp Delight.
